A scarf is a piece of fabric worn around the neck, in the head (we call it "bandana") or in the waist (substitute for belt). Scarves are worn for different reasons: could be for warmth, just for fashion or part of a religious practice. They often come in different colors, style and sizes.
You may be confused on the difference between a scarf and a shawl. Both has almost the same uses. Shawl is usually loosely worn over the shoulders, upper body and arms and sometimes also over the head. The difference between the two is the size since shawls are wider than scarves.
Scarf serves as an accessory that adds color and design to any outfit. Scarves can be tied in many ways. My favorite is the European Loop. It's simple yet elegant.
